Osaka Castle

One of Japan’s great architectural marvels, the Osaka castle played a significant role in Japan’s unification during the sixteenth century. Osaka Castle is built on top of a tall stone foundation and consists of eight stories in its interior portion and five stories on the outside. The Castle ground which extends to almost 15 acres contains 13 unique structures which have been declared as world renowned cultural assets by the Japanese government. These include the Kinzo storehouse, Tamon Turret, Sengan Turret, Otemon Gate, Sakuramon gate, Ichiban-yagura Turret, Rokuban-Yagura Turret, Inui-yagura Turret, Kinmeisui Well and others.

The castle becomes flooded with tourists especially during the festival season. The Osaka castle is easily accessible and open to public during most of the days. The sprawling grounds of the castle are mainly filled with vendors and taiko drummers during the cherry blossom season. Within the castle’s grounds, you can also find a big indoor arena namely the Osaka-jo Hall.

The Osaka castle was built in 1583, on the site of the Ishiyama Honganji Temple that was razed down much earlier. The Osaka castle was the biggest castle during those times and was intended to function as the hub of one unified Japan under the rule of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. However the Tokugawas brought an end to the Toyotomi rule in 1615 when the castle was also destroyed by them. Later, this castle was rebuilt during the 1620’s by Tokugawa Hidetada.
The reconstruction of the castle to its present form took place only during the 1930’s. The castle was renovated and regained its glamour during 1997. Today, the castle tower dons a whole new look with even an elevator on the inside for better accessibility. Within the castle visitors can find a treasure trove in the form of a museum that has nuggets of information about Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the castle’s history.

The Osaka castle is a marvellous building that is surrounded by stone walls, moats, turrets, gates as well as secondary citadels. Surrounding the castle on one side is a garden with a tea house, 600 cherry trees and the former Osaka Guest House. The entire park is lush with greenery and houses a Hokoku shrine, multi purpose arena and facilities for sports activities. The park functions as a popular hanami spot in early April when the cherry blossom festival takes place.
Visitors can reach the castle from JR Osaka Station within 10 minutes. The castle is open for visitors from 9.00A.M to 17.00P.M. Visitors can enjoy extended hours during special exhibition days and holidays. The castle remains closed between December 28 and January 1 every year. The admission fee to this place is 600 Yen. A holiday to Japan will be incomplete without a visit to the Osaka Castle.
